About Cult Image
Cult Image, why the name?
Cult, because much of this site and my merchandise is rooted in music that, even though more excepted as a major influence on many artists, was seen as music that only had a cult following. Krautrock is my particular genre, there are others. I pick Krautrock because, growing up listening to the likes of OMD, Gary Numan, The Human League and Japan, they all at some point cited a Neu! or a Can as an influence. I loved Ultravox mark 1 they worked with Eno, I equally loved mark 2, they worked with Conny Plank.
Image, because old record labels like Sky, Brain and Ohr, recording studios, like Trident, or Martin Rushent’s Genetic had fantastic logo designs, and these need to be remembered and celebrated.
I’ve had a wonderful musical education. My adult working life has included PolyGram (from ‘83), Decca (from ‘89), and The Audio Archiving Company (from ‘98), and there have been others. I have worked with incredibly knowledgeable people, listened to music (for work) ranging from Vera Lynn and Edmundo Ros to Hawkwind and Faust, via Pavarotti and Kiri Te Kanawa, and even bumped into Sir Georg Solti in just a vest and trousers!!!
Under my own steam, I’ve followed bands around the UK, and abroad, and spent to much time in record shops (but more in pubs). And, in more recent times under the banner of Experiments & Observations on Electricity, released 2 ambient / electronic albums.
Back in 2020 I resurrected an old idea, of recreating the aforementioned record label and studio logo’s. It’s been a long gestation period, and I’ve hit more than a few potholes along the way, but I guess that happens if you try to do things above board and honestly.
I won’t bore you with the finer details, it has though, been a steep learning curve.
For Cult Image to exist, I’ve not scratched the surface. I’ve had to reinterpret designs, create my own music based artwork, just to flesh out the idea. I’ve had to teach myself how to build websites, use Affinity software, even create two (albeit basic) music videos, but what a journey it has been.
The time has come for this all to become a reality, not a pipe dream. I hope you join me on my trip.
